Commandment 1 – You shall have no other Gods before me.

Hello everybody!  I am so glad that you decided to come on by again.  Well, after much prayer, I have decided to follow up our last post up with an expanded version of the Ten Commandments.  This is what I believe God has in store for us.  The commandments God gave to Moses long ago have a lot of relevance in todays world.  My plan is to break each commandment down and show how each one applies in our everyday life.  This will be a ten part series over the next couple of weeks.

Let me start off by saying that we are all sinners, and we have broken Gods laws.  Thankfully we don’t get what we deserve, and that is a death sentence.  Jesus took our place and died for our sins so that we may have life.  Remember that everyone is equal here.  There is no one better than another.  We are all equally guilty of sinning against God.  With that being said, we can now take a good long look at The Ten Commandments.  They are vitally important in our lives, and for our spiritual health.  One thing that we need to remember is that just because Jesus died on the cross for us and paid for our sins.  That doesn’t give us a green light to sin.  We must repent of our sin and sin no more.  I know it is easier said than done, but it can be done with Jesus help.  So let’s get started.

Commandment 1 – You shall have no other Gods before me.

Remember that God is the one true God.  There are no others.  He spoke everything into existence.  He created the whole solar system, and set trillions of stars into the heavens.  He is the alpha and the omega.  The first and the last.  There is nothing that he doesn’t know or sees.  He is all powerful, mighty, everlasting, and holy.  We cant even begin to comprehend his righteousness and the love that he has for us.  He is everywhere all at once and he loves you very much. These are trues about God.  The one true God.  Back when the Israelites were held captive in Egypt by Pharaoh they worshiped a lot of different Gods.

I believe they had a God for just about everything.  They worshiped many so called Gods.  God descended on top of mount Sinai and called Moses up to the top to give him the Ten Commandment.  Then God said these words: ” I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.  You shall have no other Gods before me.  This was difficult for the people to accept.  If they didn’t learn that the God who led them out of Egypt was the one true God then they couldn’t be his people no matter how well the followed the other nine commandments.  Thus God made this the first commandment.

There cant be any question in our mind of who God is, and who he is to us.  Is he the Lord of your life?  The Lord over your job?  The Lord over your finances? There are many things in this world wanting your attention, and if we don’t watch out there are certain things that can become Gods to us.  This is what he is trying to tell us here.  We need to be sure to put God first over everything.  If you look at it everything we have comes from Him.  Here is what I am telling you.  If there are things in your life that are more important than God, or takes the place of God, then they might already have become Gods to you.  This is very dangerous ground.

It is no secret that I am a recovering alcoholic/addict.  There was a time in my life that drugs and alcohol were everything to me.  I put them first before everything including God.  I am ashamed to say that, but that was the reality of the hopeless situation I found myself in.  I lived this way for quite a few years.  It was utter hell.  I remember it being so empty, hopeless, and mundane.  The only time when I prayed to God was when I was in trouble.  If you are in this circumstance please seek help, contact me, or someone in recovery.  This is called being spiritually bankrupt/dead.  It may not be drugs or alcohol.  What about pornography, money, fame, sex, cigarettes, food, etc….the list goes on.  The devil uses these things to sidetrack our walk with God.  This is a personal assessment.  You have to be  honest with yourself about this.  When God says something he means it.  I am dealing with the whole quitting smoking thing right now.  This isn’t a God, but it gets in the way of being the person he created me to be.

Lets keep it simple here.  If there is anything standing in between you and God ask yourself has this become a God to me?  Only you can answer that question honestly.  Jesus has the power and the strength to help you.  He just needs to hear you ask.  Let’s take this study through the Ten Commandments slowly and thoroughly.  It will make a better you!!
